The exam

What the DELE is

The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) are the official Spanish qualifications awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. There is one for each level, from A1 to C2, and they never expire.

Each exam tests reading, listening, writing and speaking, and the result is simply a pass (apto) or not yet (no apto). People take it for university, for work, for Spanish nationality (which asks for A2) or for the satisfaction of having their level recognised.

apto = pass

How preparation works

  1. Find your level

A free first conversation and a short diagnostic task show which exam suits you and how far you are from it.

  2. Plan to the exam date

We choose a sitting and build a plan backwards from it, putting the time where you need it most.

  3. Practise every paper

Real task types, timed like the exam, with written work marked and explained against the official criteria.

  4. Rehearse the speaking test

Mock speaking exams run the way an examiner runs them, so the format feels familiar on the day.

DELE questions

Which level should I take?

The one you can pass with confidence. In the first conversation Elvira looks at your Spanish and recommends a level, and whether to aim higher with a little more time.

Where can I sit the DELE in Manchester?

The exam is held several times a year at official exam centres, and the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester is one of them. Elvira will help you choose a date and register in time.

How long does preparation take?

It depends on your starting point. If you are already at the level, a few weeks of focused exam practice can be enough; if not, we build the level first and the exam technique alongside it.

Do you prepare for the A2 for Spanish nationality?

Yes. Spanish nationality by residence asks for the DELE A2 or higher, and Elvira prepares candidates for it.

Can I prepare online?

Yes. Lessons are online by video call or in person in Manchester, so you can prepare from Salford, anywhere in Greater Manchester or further away.

How much does it cost?

DELE preparation is charged by the hour, at the price shown on the Lessons & prices page. The first conversation is free.
